Crypto News Roundup: A Wild Week in the World of Digital Assets

It had been a busy week for the cryptocurrency market as news and events shook prices, fueled discussions, and contextually set the stage for the industry itself. As of today, Feb. 25, 2025, here’s a snapshot of the top stories, bringing you up to speed on the biggest trends shaping what’s happening in crypto.

Bitcoin Falls Below $90,000; Selloff Weighs

The price of bitcoin, the bellwether of the crypto market, plunged this week, falling under $90,000 for the first time since mid-November. The decline represents a turnaround from a post-election rally triggered by Donald Trump’s early-November victory that at first brought optimism to the sector. Analysts cite a host of factors behind the sell-off, from impending trade tariffs suggested by the Trump administration to a series of industry-specific setbacks. Bitcoin tumbled to its lowest point today, hitting levels not seen since mid-June and sending shockwaves throughout the wider market. Ether, XRP, and Solana also plunged, with an index of the biggest digital tokens posting its largest four-day slide since early August. More than $1.34 billion in bullish crypto positions have been liquidated in a single day, reflecting the magnitude of the pullback.

The week’s most jaw-dropping story came from Dubai-headquartered cryptocurrency exchange Bybit, which fell victim to a $1.4 billion hack — the largest theft in the history of crypto. The breach affected the exchange’s Ethereum wallet and has raised new questions about security in the industry. Bybit reassured its 60 million customers across the globe that it can pay back impacted clients, as well as is in the process of tracking down the perpetrators. The hack sent tremors through the market, fostering the broader selloff as investors dealt with renewed fears of vulnerability. Interestingly, Ether prices had seen a spike of over 5% since the hack, largely due to a huge amount of over-the-counter buying coming from Bybit itself, almost 300 million in size.

Changes in Regulation During Trump’s Watch

Regulatory-wise, the Trump administration is a game changer. Testimonials from recent executive orders and appointments signal a pivot towards a more crypto-friendly posture in the U.S., but President Trump has reshaped existing positions, creating a Working Group on Digital Asset Markets to investigate the sector’s promise. Now, with a new leadership at the helm of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), the agency seems to be taking a softer approach. The SEC has also reportedly stopped enforcement actions against top figures—Binance included—and may withdraw its lawsuit against Coinbase, a suit initiated in 2023 under the watch of former chair Gary Gensler. There is speculation that the longstanding case involving Ripple may soon be resolved, further enhancing XRP’s profile. At the same time, some of those Trump appointees with crypto expertise, such as Brian Quintenz at the CFTC and Jonathan Gould at the OCC, suggest an approach that could lean toward an innovative regulatory environment rather than enforcement.

Traders Watch for Bitcoin’s Next Move

Some traders, however, are still optimistic despite the latest dip. A crypto analyst recently said the act of Bitcoin regaining $106,000—around a 13% rise from its going rate—could send it on a “new round of price discovery.” Others, however, warn that a move below the $92,000-$94,000 support zone could lead it to test $85,000, a level it last hit in November. Historical context also adds some intrigue: March has tended to be a good month for Bitcoin, producing an average return of 13% since 2013. As regulatory tailwinds and market cycles play out, Bitcoin is now under the microscope — will it rebound, or is bearish momentum here to stay?

On Momentum & Sector Highlights

Amid the volatility, there are also signs of crypto’s mainstream adoption. Robinhood is doubling down on crypto offerings with plans for new products in Singapore in 2023. Over in the UK, the Winklevoss twins — founders of crypto exchange Gemini — have kicked in £3.6 million for a joint ownership stake in eighth-tier football club Real Bedford FC along with a crypto podcaster. On the tech side, AST SpaceMobile and AT&T showed off satellite-to-cellular video calls with a plain old phone — a technology that could be brought to remote locales and emergencies and might even (and hopefully!) have crypto in its payment model down the line.

What’s Next?

The cryptocurrency market is at a turning point. The Bybit hack has highlighted persistent security risks while price action tests investor resolve. Yet regulatory moves and technological leaps seem to make this a sector ripe for change. Be it a six-figure Bitcoin return or a fuller correction, the next weeks could prove pivotal. One thing’s for sure: there is never a dull moment in the world of crypto.

And to rule back (pun intended) through it all—stay tuned as this is only the main act (and I am sure we have only just begun)
of what could become a defining year for digital assets.
